Featured in the pages of World Port Development on several occasions, work on the deepening and widening of the new port approach in Durban, South Africa has come to an end.

After almost three years, the Belgian dredging and hydraulic engineering group DEME have completed a major port upgrading programme in the Port of Durban, South Africa. The project was the biggest of its kind on the African Continent. It may be compared to other port construction projects which DEME has executed in recent years, such as in Dhamra (India), Sepetiba (Brazil), Le Havre (France) and recently London Gateway (UK).

World Port Development takes a look at how the German Ports have fared over the last year, in particular the Port of Hamburg who report that after a difficult year, moderate growth is on the horizon in 2010.

 

In 2009 German ports faced troubling times with dropping container throughput figures of around 20% on average. In comparison it is estimated that the number of containers handled globally in 2009 amounted to around 446 million TEU, a drop of almost 11% on the 500million+ TEU handled in 2008. So, the decline in container throughput in German ports has seriously affected businesses – directly and indirectly.
