Attacks on mining firms in the Philippines

Earlier this week, around 200 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, disguised as policemen and driving trucks and a van, stormed the Taganito’s compound in Claver town, Surigao del Norte province.

Another group of about 200 attacked the nearby Platinum Metals Group Corporation in Cagdianao village, with the firm’s guards also disarmed. Three security personnel were killed.

In South Cotaabto province, lawmen have tightened the security within the area of Tampakan copper prospect held jointly by Xstrata Copper and Autralia-listed Indophil Resources to prevent any similar attacks.
