Cargotec automates the gate at Terminal de Vila Velha in Brazil

Terminal de Vila Velha in Espirito Santo, Brazil, has opted for the installation of Cargotec's Kalmar SmartLanes OCR technology solution to ensure that both security and productivity at the gate are improved. Cargotec will provide the SmartLane solution, consisting of an Automated Gate System (AGS). The AGS automatically captures the container numbers, truck license plates, chassis plates and driver identification of all inbound and outbound transactions. Cargotec is responsible for both the project delivery and the ongoing maintenance and support.

Great month for the Port of Houston

"November financial results proved strong in what is expected to be a great year," said Executive Director Len Waterworth at a recent Port Commission Meeting. Year-to-date Port Authority revenues of USD205 million reflected an increase of 10% over 2011. Growth has been fueled primarily by steel, which for the year has increased by 1.2 million tonnes or 29%, compared to last year.

APM Terminals Apapa named "Best Terminal Operator of the Year"

APM Terminals Apapa in Nigeria was named the winner of the 2012 Terminal Operator Award by the Maritime Reporters' Association of Nigeria at their annual Maritime Excellence Awards ceremony. APM Terminals Apapa, which assumed operational control of the facility in 2006, is now the busiest container terminal in West Africa, with an estimated throughput of 720,000 TEU this year, up from 650,000 TEU in 2011.

Wildlife charity "deeply sceptical" about rehashed Severn Barrage plans

The Royal Society of the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is deeply sceptical that a Cardiff to Weston barrage could be built without unacceptable damage to wildlife and the environment. The claim is made in the wildlife charity's written evidence to the Commons Select Committee on the Severn Barrage. This follows a report in the Financial Times that Hafren power is seeking investors for a UK£25 billion barrage scheme.

Chairman Dover Harbour Board retires

Dover Harbour Board (DHB) has announced that Roger Mountford, its current Chairman, is to retire from the Board on 31 December, upon completion of 12 years of service as a non-executive. The Secretary of State for Transport has appointed the present Deputy Chairman, George Jenkins, as his successor.
