Award shines a light on energy-saving retrofit project

The award recognizes HPA for undertaking a lighting retrofit at 450 Sherman Ave., a multi-tenanted warehouse with more than 325,000 square feet of storage and office space.

“The project has delivered great results for us and for our tenants,” said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. “Environmental responsibility is one of our primary guiding principles, and we are very pleased when we can save energy, save money, and make our tenants happy – all at the same time.”

Funding for the retrofit came from HPA’s ongoing Green Initiatives program which sets aside funding for projects that reduce energy consumption, and from the Ontario Power Authority’s saveONenergy incentive program. Horizon Utilities assisted HPA throughout the process, providing technical advice and program information. The retrofit involves the ongoing replacement of 1,200 400-watt sodium-vapor light fixtures in favour of high-efficiency light fixtures and motion sensors. When fully complete, the retrofit is expected to result in annual savings of approximately 940,000 kWh, and the project is expected to pay for itself within a year.

The initiative has resulted in a more energy efficient warehouse, with better light coverage and colour rendering.
