Port of Esbjerg launches tender for the operation of new combi-terminal

The purpose of the terminal is to ensure a better connection between road, rail and sea, thus strengthening intermodal freight transport. The project builds on the Danish political agreement “A green transport policy” and is in line with the European Commission’s goal of increasing intermodal transport. Rail Net Denmark, the Municipality of Esbjerg and the Port of Esbjerg are behind the project.

The terminal is primarily expected to handle rail freight between the Port of Esbjerg and eastern Denmark and southern Sweden, but also to provide a feeder service to the terminals in Padborg and Taulov. The terminal is expected to have sufficient capacity to handle up to three trains a day on the two terminal tracks.

The tender includes the development and operation of the terminal from Q1 2015.

The operator will be required to define customer-related measures and activities, which can contribute to the development of the terminal and, as such, secure the necessary amount of freight.

In order to take full advantage of the opportunities in the terminal, it is furthermore fundamental that the operator is capable of developing the intermodal and multimodal services through both conventional and innovative tranship technologies.
