Decision delayed on the deepening and widening of the Lower and Outer Elbe

Port of Hamburg Marketing Executive Board Members Axel Mattern and Ingo Egloff have both issued a statement respecting the decision announced by the Federal Administrative Court (FAC) in Leipzig on the deepening and widening of the navigation channel on the Lower and Outer Elbe. The FAC announced that it can only take a final decision when the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has clarified questions still outstanding on the so-called prohibition of deterioration and desirability of improvement embodied in the European Water Framework Directive.

New sulphur regulations force changes at Stena Line

The new sulphur directive for shipping traffic within the North European SECA area, which comes into force on 1 January 2015, is due to have a significant economic impact on Stena Line's business. The new sulphur directive has been in the planning stage for a number of years and its negative economic impact, a significant increase in fuel costs, was one of the key drivers behind Stena Line's decision to implement a company-wide two year Change Programme in 2013. 

PCC Intermodal awards reachstacker contract to Kalmar

PCC Intermodal SA (PCC) in Poland has awarded Kalmar, part of Cargotec, an order for five new reachstackers. The new 45 tonnes machines boost the PCC fleet of Kalmar reachstackers to 13 units and will be operating at Gliwice, Brzeg Dolny and Kutno rail terminals. The order is booked into Cargotec's third quarter intake, with one unit delivered in July and next ones scheduled for delivery by the end of 2014.

Port of Esbjerg launches tender for the operation of new combi-terminal

The Port of Esbjerg in Denmark is looking for a private operator to run and develop its new combi-terminal and invites interested parties to submit an Expression of Interest. The combi-terminal consists of two tracks and covers a total area of 48.000 m2. The terminal connects the Port of Esbjerg with the rail network and provides the opportunity to trans-ship and manage freight efficiently. 

Contargo expands in Neuss

Contargo Neuss GmbH is renting a second barge terminal in Neuss am Rhein, Germany, thus doubling its container depot capacity. The company also plans further expansion at the location. The former Rhenania terminal, later named Neuss Trimodal-Terminal, which Contargo will be using from October, has an area of 26,200 m2 with room for 3,000 TEU. Together with the capacities already in use on the Flosshafenstrasse, this will increase Contargo's total depot area in Neuss to 6,300 TEU.

New Port Manager for Durban announced

Today, National Ports Authority (TNPA) Chief Executive, Tau Morwe said farewell to the Durban Port Manager, Thami Ntshingila, as he prepares to hand over the reins. After having served the organisation for fifteen years, fourteen of these spent as a Port Manager at the Ports of East London, Richards Bay and Durban, Ntshingila has a wealth of information and skill to pass on, and will play a mentoring role to his successor Moshe Motlohi.

Toyota chooses Savannah for exports to Australia & New Zealand

The Georgia Ports Authority has doubled its Toyota export business, as the company is now moving Highlander SUVs bound for Australia and New Zealand through the Port of Savannah's Ocean Terminal. "The efficiency and world-class customer service at our roll-on/roll-off facilities in Savannah and Brunswick have made GPA a trusted name in the movement of vehicles and heavy equipment," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. "Combined, our terminals moved more than 700,000 cars, trucks and tractors last fiscal year, and we're on track to beat that record in FY2015."

The Port of Felixstowe, the Port of Britain, has become the first UK port to receive full Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status.
