“We continue to show growth in the primary areas of our operation,” said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “In April, truck containers, rail containers and ship calls were up compared with last year.”
In April, the port processed 73,810 truck moves, up 3.2 percent; vessel calls, up 1.3 percent; rail containers, up 9.4 percent; Virginia Inland Port volume, down 16 percent; barge containers, down 7.4 percent; and vehicle units, down 55 percent. Thus far into the calendar year, the port’s TEU volume is up 8.5 percent compared with the same period last year; truck moves, up 9.2 percent; vessel calls, up 2.3 percent; rail containers, up 9.8 percent; Virginia Inland Port volume, down 5 percent; barge containers, down 5 percent; and vehicle units, up 11 percent.
“April was the second month we have had so far this year with volumes above 200,000 TEUs and we are expecting this kind of volume to become the norm,” Reinhart said. “To prepare for this level of volume we continue to invest in cargo conveyance equipment, add members to the operations team, implement technology, improve communications and make those strategic moves necessary to create capacity and improve throughput.
