During operations the boom of the 23-row super post-panamax crane built in 1998 by ZPMC, China snapped and fell 50m onto the hold of the 6,674 TEU Maersk MV Karachi it was working on.
The wreckage in the hold caused serious problems for the authorities to recover the body of the deceased man. No other person was hurt in the accident. The Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
The accident caused damage to the hull of the ship and some of the containers on deck. The ship will need some repairs before it can depart the German port.
This accident follows another one at the same terminal in February 2015 when the 8,700 TEU Maersk Laberinto hit the berthed Maersk Missouri and significantly damaging three cranes.
