Sweden-based Fogmaker International AB has announced the launch of a section valve, which offers targeted fire suppression for vehicles with several critical compartments. Traditionally, a fire suppression system can handle only one deployment zone with one piston accumulator. The section valve will be able to handle up to four different deployment zones with the same piston accumulator.

The valve has the potential of revolutionising fire suppression for commercial electrical vehicles. A vehicle or machine with a diesel engine has most of the fire hazards in one single compartment, but due to basic design criteria for battery electric vehicles, for instance an electric bus can have fire risks in several places. The new valve addresses this challenge by covering up to four individual deployment zones, directing the fire suppressant to where it is needed and buying crucial time when it’s needed the most.
The section valve will be particularly useful for battery-electric buses. “With the section valve, the system offers cooling for two minutes. This is vital time when evacuating a bus” says Carl Zandler, responsible for the bus segment at Fogmaker International. “The time can easily be increased to four minutes. This is a valuable window in any evacuation scenario.”
Electric buses are rapidly becoming the backbone of modern public transport, and the intelligent, responsive fire suppression solution addresses the greatest safety concern of the BEV (battery-electric vehicle) era, bridging the critical gap between fire onset and passenger evacuation.
