China’s reciprocal port fee programme starts to bite shipping lines

On 14 October, China’s reciprocal port fee programme was launched and was having an immediate impact as carriers reported they were diverting ships, and others were receiving hefty bills.

Shipping lines Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd were the first to react, announcing “temporary changes” for two US-flagged vessels on their Asian routes. “We will be making changes to the TP7 rotation to make sure your supply chains continue to run as smoothly as possible, if you are utilising this service” Maersk announced in a customer advisory.
