Once the new terminal is operational, containerised cargo from the region can be shipped to the coastal Jiangsu ports of Taicang and Lianyungang, and from there to destinations across the world.
In the past, there were no ports on the Huaihe River that could handle containers or overweight cargo, which resulted in most cargo being trucked to Yangtze River ports for shipping.
The new terminal, which has a quay length of 166m and offers two 1,000 tonnes multi-purpose berths with an annual container capacity of 55,000 TEU and break-bulk capacity of 570,000 tonnes, and is expected to play an important role in the economic development of Bengbu city and northern Anhui province.
The 1,078km long Huaihe River is located about mid-way between the Yellow and Yangtze rivers and, like them, flows from west to east. It enters the Yangtze River in Jiangdu, Jiangsu province.
