Container volume rise breaks previous record in July at NYNJ

As a top tier port, the port handles some of the industry’s newest Ultra Large Container Vessels and gives shippers access to an extensive network of six modern terminals, an on-dock rail network, easy-to-access highways, and nearby distribution centers and warehouses.  

Just released statistics show a 6.5 percent increase in total volume for July 2019 from the previous July (662,994 TEUs/376,135 containers versus 622,559 TEUs/354,101 containers). During this same timeframe (July 2018 versus July 2019), import loads increased by 4.6 percent, export loads increased by 1.4 percent, and export empties increased by 13.0 percent. The port’s year to date volume total, from January to July 2019, reached 4,315,835 TEUs. 

Associated increases were seen in rail volume, which increased 3.8 percent over July 2018, totalling 56,339 lifts for July 2019.  Rail volume increased during January through July 2019 by 4.3 percent over the same span in 2018.  

Autos handled by the port also increased to 44,931 in July 2019, an increase of 2.3 percent from July 2018. Auto volume for January through July 2019 increased by 5.8 percent over the same month span in 2018.
