Kalmar's first RTG delivery to Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corporation

0

The cranes will be used in Taoyuan Inland Container Terminal and Hsichih Inland Container Terminal.

Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corporation offers inland container terminal services to customers all over Taiwan, including lifting operations and control of inbound and outbound containers; container repairing and cleaning service; and warehousing in the distribution center. The company is now expanding the business to international logistics market. The five Kalmar RTG cranes will significantly improve operational efficiency in the inland container terminals as well as help the company to achieve their business targets.

Kalmar RTG features a low-emission diesel engine and an all-electric trolley, wheel turning and spreader. As it uses no hydraulics, servicing is straightforward and there are fewer components to inspect and maintain. The Kalmar RTG’s maintenance interval of 1,000 hours is the longest in the industry.

Mr Hung Ping Kun, Chairman, Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corporation, says: “We have a long-standing relationship with Kalmar for almost twenty years and have always appreciated the long-term reliability and proven performance of their equipment. Our branch in Thailand is also using Kalmar RTGs, thus we believe the new Kalmar fleet will help us to reach our operational goals and at the same time boost efficiency and productivity of container moves at the terminals.”

“We are pleased about this first order of Kalmar RTG for Evergreen in Taiwan. We look forward to further strengthening the cooperation between our companies and continuing to support their business operations.” says Jan Karlsson, Sales Director, Automation & Projects, Kalmar North East Asia.

The five new Kalmar RTGs joined a fleet of six Kalmar empty container handlers at Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corporation. The cranes were delivered from Kalmar’s joint venture Rainbow-Cargotec Industries in Taicang, China.

Georgia's ports set new industry standard

Across all ports, GPA’s total tonnage increased by 13 percent, or 334,950 tons, to reach 2.94 million tons and the Authority’s busiest April ever.

“Savannah has established itself as a premier gateway serving the Eastern United States,” said Griff Lynch, GPA’s executive director. “Our team is not only keeping pace with record volumes, but has managed to set new industry standards in cargo velocity, berth productivity and congestion free gates.”

Lynch cited the recent visit of the COSCO Development, the first 13,000-TEU vessel to call the U.S. East Coast, as an example. During the 30 hours the vessel was in dock, six cranes moved more than 9,700 TEUs on and off the vessel, with a net berth productivity of 220 boxes per hour.

Last month’s performance continues a surge of growth for the GPA across the first four months of the calendar year, with TEUs increasing to 1.3 million, up 10.2 percent (121,258 TEUs) compared to the same period in 2016.

“Our goal at Georgia’s ports has been to stay one step ahead of demand in the marketplace,” said GPA Board Chairman Jimmy Allgood. “As a result of this approach, we can accommodate more and more vessels like the COSCO Development without delays.”

Lynch said the scale and scope of Garden City Terminal is perfectly suited for the massive exchanges coming on and off Neo-Panamax vessels. “As the size of vessels grows, so does the need for larger terminals with significant assets to handle increased volumes. At 1,200 acres, handling nearly 10,000 truck moves per day and 38 trains per week, Savannah is perfectly positioned to fill this need,” Lynch said.

Measured in containers, total refrigerated cargo – a sector that includes export poultry, peanuts, pecans and blueberries among other farm produce – grew by 8.2 percent in April. For the calendar year to date, refrigerated cargo is up by 11.6 percent, 2,466 additional containers through April, for a total of 23,661 containers.

Auto and machinery units via Savannah and Brunswick were up 3.5 percent (7,406) to reach 217,729 units during the first four months of the year.

In other business, the GPA Board on Monday approved the purchase of three new electric rubber-tired gantry cranes for use at the Appalachian Regional Port (ARP) in Chatsworth, Ga. The e-RTGs virtually eliminate diesel usage, run quieter and require less maintenance than diesel-powered RTGs. The ARP, an inland port to be operated by the GPA, will open additional markets across Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky while converting tens of thousands of containers from truck to rail. The ARP is projected to begin operation in 2018.

Speaking from Madrid, where Konecranes announced the partnership during its annual management conference, President and CEO Panu Routila spoke about the values and strategic intent that underpin the agreement:
“Valtteri has all the makings of a true champion and we’re thrilled to work together with him on this mutually-beneficial co-operation,” says Routila. “It’s still early in the 2017 motorsports season and Valtteri already has some great results with his new team, which makes the partnership even more exciting.”

“Around the globe Konecranes is recognized for being a technology leader, specifically in the areas that are core to any lifting operation: the gears, the motor and the controls,” continues Routila. “Together with new services like Konecranes TRUCONNECT® for remote monitoring, our business has strong parallels with the motorsports world, where top performance is also dependant on innovative technology, excellent teamwork and relentless focus.”
In the coming months, existing and potential customers of Konecranes will see the partnership come to life across the web, social media, outdoor advertising, videos, events and more. Bottas will also place the Konecranes logo on his personal website and social media domains, as well as on his race overalls.

Bottas, fresh from a weekend of racing in Barcelona, was also in Madrid for the launch event. He spoke about his motivation for choosing to work with Konecranes.
“I’m very happy to make an agreement of this kind with Konecranes, a company that aligns so well with my background and what I personally believe in,” says Bottas. “This is about having proud roots in Finland, yet working around the world. About using cutting-edge technology and purpose-built equipment that brings together some of the best engineering and teamwork on the planet. And about focusing on being the best at what you do – yet never losing sight of where you come from.”

Bottas’s agent Ville Ahtiainen, who represents the driver for all his personal marketing deals, says the agreement with Konecranes is all about mutual benefit and respect. “The best and most fruitful marketing partnerships are those where the parties truly believe in each other and see the world in the same way,” says Ahtiainen. “This is exactly how it is for Konecranes and Valtteri Bottas. It really is an ideal match.”

Liebherr Maritime Service Factory revives a nine year old LHM 180 for Croatia

0

Since 2015 a specialised department, namely the Liebherr Maritime Service Factory, has been dealing exclusively with refurbishment projects.

This department carries out extensive renovation work on used products from the whole range of Liebherr maritime products, without direct dependence on the manufacture of new products. Service activities extend from the repair and exchange of single parts and components up to the complete overhaul of machines with a high number of operating hours.

The latest overhauling project was a mobile harbour crane type LHM 180 build in 2008. Used under permanent load for the last nine years in the harbour of Figueira de Foz / Portugal the machine was delivered from its former owner to Liebherr in Rostock in April 2015. Upon the arrival at Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH, the mobile harbour crane passed through a profound restauration in various components of the machine. Extensive overhauls and optimisations were carried out on the steel construction of the undercarriage, the slewing platform and the tower. The whole overhauling process including refurbishment of electrical parts took twelve month and involved a team comprising 30 Liebherr employees. After finishing the overhaul, the mobile harbour crane was bought by Petrokemija d.o.o. in Croatia where it was assembled and put back into service by the middle of March 2017. The LHM 180 has a maximum outreach of 35 metres and a maximum capacity of 35 tonnes (grab operation) and is now used for bulk and general cargo handling in the port of Sibenik/ Croatia. Such successful overhauling projects prove both the efficiency of the Liebherr Maritime Service Factory in Rostock as well as the quality of Liebherr maritime products.

Demand for Overhauls increases
Liebherr Maritime is recording an increasing number of orders for machine overhauls. Eventually, every machine achieves a certain amount of operating hours and the owner has to decide whether to overhaul the existing machine or buy a new one. The purchase of a second-hand or overhauled machine is often an inexpensive and economic alternative. Despite low investment, no concessions need to be made in terms of quality of manufacture, customer services and support, or safe operation of the machine. Additionally, it is ensured that the machine fulfils the proven quality requirements of a Liebherr product, as there is no dealer or external repair service involved. Overhauling existing equipment is also an ideal solution for operating companies that value familiar technology and rely on personnel that is specifically trained for the operation of existing machines, as no additional resources are required for adjustment processes.

The increasing attractiveness of overhauled cargo handling machines and components is reflected in the order situation of the Liebherr Maritime Service Factory in Rostock. Since 2013 the number of orders for part and general overhauls on maritime products from Liebherr has more than doubled. In 2016, nine overhaul projects have been completed in Rostock.
