DP World statement about incident at Jebel Ali Port

While berthing, a CMA CGM container vessel collided with the harbour wall striking the leg of a quay crane causing it to fall. A second crane was also shifted off its rails during the incident but remained upright and stable.

Our first priority is the safety and wellbeing of our employees and all visitors to the port. DP World’s terminal safety teams responded immediately to the incident and head office global safety teams joined them on site within five minutes. Working with external emergency response teams, the area was evacuated and an exclusion zone created. Safety drones were also deployed to survey the area, locate anyone in need of medical assistance and to ensure the safety of the responding crews.

The incident resulted in one moderate and nine minor injuries, but thankfully no fatalities. Medical treatment for all minor injuries was received at the DP World Medical Clinic at the terminal, while the gentleman with the moderate injury, a fractured arm and leg, was taken to hospital and is currently in a stable condition.

An investigation is currently underway to establish the cause of the incident. The collapsed quay crane will be removed following all necessary safety procedures once the investigation has been completed. The second crane is under assessment for structural integrity and not in use until further notice.

All necessary measures were taken to minimise disruption of service to customers during the emergency response activation and in the subsequent investigation phase.

We thank the CMA CGM crew, external emergency response services and the DP World safety and operations teams and who worked together, ensuring no serious injuries and no fatalities.

The contracts were awarded over the last few weeks for projects in Angola, Benin, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Nigeria.

In Angola a 5-year maintenance dredging contract has been awarded by Angola LNG for its gas terminal in Soyo. Works will start by mid of June 2017.

In Benin DEME was awarded a contract for coastal protection works at the Cotonou shoreline. Works will include beach nourishment with a total volume of 1,5 million m³ as well as revetment works and groyne construction.
In Ghana DEME participates in a contract for the Tema Port expansion project. Ghana’s main seaport, operated by Meridian Port Services (MPS), is gearing up to accommodate some of the world’s largest container ships and increase cargo handling services and capacity. The project includes dredging and land reclamation of 3 million m³. Works are set to start by the end of May 2017.

In Ivory Coast a contract has been awarded for the maintenance dredging of the port of Abidjan. Works will be executed in May 2017.

It is the third consecutive time that DEME is contracted by the Port Autonome d’Abidjan to maintain the port.

DEME also returns to Liberia for maintenance dredging works in the Freeport of Liberia. The contract has been awarded by Liberia’s National Ports Authority.

In Nigeria, DEME acquired a contract for the Maiyegun Waterfront development in Lagos. DEME reclaims approximately 600,000 m³ to raise the level of an existing beach. Maiyegun Waterfront will include new housing units, a commercial hub, as well as leisure facilities. The contract in Nigeria follows the recently won project for the Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL), where DEME is involved in the yard and quay wall construction, as well as the dredging of the berth pocket and access channel to the quay, on behalf of Samsung Heavy Industries.

Over the years DEME developed significant expertise across Africa, where the company is currently executing several major dredging and land reclamation projects.

New empty container yard coming to DP World London Gateway Port

The five acre yard will be operated and managed by Solent Stevedores, an award-winning stevedoring company with a broad range of bulk and general cargo handling and storage services at ports in Southampton, Jersey, Immingham and London. The facility will be located on Berth 7, outside of the terminal’s ISPS perimeter but adjacent to the port’s main gate. A number of associated container services will also be offered by Solent Stevedores from the site. Work to develop the yard will commence next month, with it then due to become operational by the first quarter of 2018. The announcement of further investment in the UK’s most sophisticated logistics hub comes just as the first THE Alliance vessels, operating on Asia-Europe and transatlantic routes, begin calling at the port. This complements the continued expansion of the Logistics Park, with Lidl starting operations out of the London Gateway Logistics Centre from April and work on UPS’s 345,000 sq ft parcel sorting hub is progressing on schedule, with the centre set to go live in the fourth quarter of 2017. James Leeson, Head of Port Commercial, DP World London Gateway, said: “DP World has an established relationship with Solent Stevedores in Southampton and is delighted that the company is supporting our growth with this new facility at London Gateway. “It will provide more choice at the port for our customers when they’re seeking solutions for the storage of empty containers. “The DP World London Gateway logistics hub is growing fast; the network of services operating out of the port is now truly global, with access available into or out of the port from all of the world’s major economic centres. In turn, there is strong demand for ancillary logistics services providers to set up bases here, while interest in distribution centres on the Logistics Park remains extremely high.” Fiona Robson, Managing Director, Solent Stevedores said: “We’re really looking forward to beginning operations at DP World London Gateway. The port is growing fast and we are absolutely certain that we have the ability to provide a high quality, competitive service for users of the port and add value to their operations. “This marks an expansion of our successful service offerings at Port of Southampton, Port of St Helier, Port of Immingham and Silvertown, London.” –
