The eight cranes weigh 1,240 tonnes in total and each crane is 29m high, 27.6m long, 5.6m wide. They can safely and efficiently move, load and unload the standard 40 tonnes cargo container. This project was signed between Doosan Vina and SGP in March of 2016 and the design, manufacture and assembly took eight months to complete. With the hand-over to SGP Doosan Vina has now supplied 65 “Made in Vietnam” cranes to domestic and international crane customers.
Port seeks Public input on rail facility
The Port will host the first of two public hearings at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Silverado Park, 1545 W. 31st St., to gather comments on the study, released in December. The second hearing will be 6 p.m., Jan. 18, at the Port Interim Administrative Offices, 4801 Airport Plaza Drive. An open house will be held prior to each hearing, beginning at 5:30 pm. Educational displays and information regarding the Port’s overall rail strategy will be provided. Spanish translation and sign language interpretation will also be available.
The Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility, proposed for the northern area of the Port, would shift more cargo to “on-dock rail,” where containers are placed directly on trains at marine terminals, significantly reducing trips by trucks throughout the region. No trucks would visit the rail facility. Instead, smaller train segments would be brought to the facility to be joined together into a full-size train.
The rail yard would be operated by Pacific Harbor Line, which provides short haul rail transportation switching services, railroad track maintenance and train dispatching services under contract to the Port. Pacific Harbor Line is the first railroad in the nation that has converted its entire fleet to clean diesel locomotives that reduce air pollution and save fuel.
Ports of Stockholm sets new container record
At the beginning of December 2016 Ports of Stockholm exceeded the previous record set at Frihamnen of just over 51,000 containers*. The number of containers in 2016 will be around 54,000.
“It is extremely positive that the number of containers has increased at Frihamnen as we are simultaneously building a new freight port that in the future will account for a major portion of the supply of goods to the rapidly growing Stockholm region,” explains Henrik Widerståhl, Deputy Managing Director and Head of Marketing at Ports of Stockholm.
The Container Terminal at Frihamnen is an efficient terminal that is located at the heart of Sweden’s largest consumer market, containing one third of Sweden’s population. The world’s second largest container shipping company, MSC, operates services to and from the terminal. Other shipping companies that operate into and out of the terminal are Team Lines, TransAtlantic Container and Unifeeder.
Ports of Stockholm is building a new port to the south of Stockholm, the Stockholm Norvik Port, which is anticipated to open in 2020 and will have a draught of 16.5 m (the maximum for the Baltic Sea). The Stockholm Norvik Port will make it possible to transport goods by sea as close to the country’s largest consumer area as possible. This results in major environmental benefits and simultaneously reduces the pressure on Sweden’s already congested road and railway networks.
South Carolina Ports Authority announces record container volumes in 2016
SCPA handled 1.996 million TEUs in 2016, surpassing the previous record of 1.985 million TEUs handled in 2005. Container volume in TEU was up 1.2 percent compared to last year. Loaded TEU volume was up 4 percent year-over-year while empty container volume was down 10 percent.
“This is a significant accomplishment for the SCPA of which we are very proud,” said Jim Newsome, SCPA president and CEO. “We are cautiously optimistic about the future given the significant automotive projects that exist in the Southeast along with the seeming recovery of emerging market economies, which drives U.S. exports. Our focus is squarely on realizing ongoing enhancements to handle the significant deployment of big container ships, specifically refurbishing our wharves, raising our cranes, deepening our harbor as soon as possible, and expanding our successful inland port network with a second inland port facility in Dillon, SC.”
The South Carolina Inland Port Greer handled a record 103,639 rail lifts in 2016, an increase of 38% over the previous calendar year.
