Port of Felixstowe celebrates 50 years of Container Terminals

0

Firmly established as the UK’s largest container port, Felixstowe’s history has been marked by a succession of firsts. Originally known as the New South Quay, the first dedicated container terminal opened in July 1967, initially with just 500ft (152m) of quay and a single Paceco Vickers portainer crane.

Clemence Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Felixstowe and Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Europe, said:

“The Port of Felixstowe has come a long way over the last 50 years. From a single-berth operation with one crane we now have nine berths providing over 3,000 metres of deep-water container quay serviced by 33 ship-to-shore gantry cranes.

“The operation today bears no real resemblance to those early years. The scale and level of technical innovation have grown beyond recognition. But not everything has changed. Felixstowe was chosen in 1967 because of its proximity to the main shipping lanes and the main ports of Northern Europe. That remains a key differentiator but the position today has been improved by the development of road and rail links that are second to none.”

Change has been another constant at Felixstowe over the last 50 years. Landguard Terminal was completed in the 1970s followed by Trinity Terminal, the UK’s first post-panamax facility, which was built in phases through the 1980s and 1990s with the final phase completed in 2004.

Since then growth has continued. The most recent phase of development, Berths 8&9, was opened in 2011 and extended in 2015. The creation of the newest terminal involved the reclamation of additional land from the River Orwell but also includes the site of the New South Quay, bringing the story full-circle and ensuring that the largest container ships in the world are handled where the very first container ships visited 50 years ago.

Expansion of PortShuttle Rotterdam with the GVT Group of Logistics

Now, an additional service will be added six times a week, with connections to Tilburg and Eindhoven.

PortShuttle has been in operation since September 2015, and is responsible for the exchange of containers between the various deep-sea terminals. “This year, volumes were slightly lower than expected, partly due to the start-up problems at the new terminals,” said Eric van Wijngaarden, CEO of initiator De Boom Groep. “With the entry of the GVT Group of Logistics and the additional number of trips, we have managed to achieve a viable concept, and we will in any case be in business throughout 2017.”

“We want to be able to complement the deep-sea services even better,” Director Wil Versteijnen adds. “This rail connection allows us to offer the speed and reliability that transportation by trucks lack due to the road congestion on the A15-A16. Our expectations are high.”

“The PortShuttle is a service that genuinely adds value for the port of Rotterdam,” said Matthijs van Doorn, Logistics manager of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. “Increased ease in the exchange of containers, strengthening of the rail product and a nice sustainable solution for the port.”

Konecranes Power Drive; Same power – less fuel

The new system is designed to further enhance fuel savings with remained performance for customers, offering also a lighter environmental footprint for their machines. By adding a new hydraulic system configuration and optimizing the rpm in addition to a transmission with lock-up function, Konecranes has designed a system to cut the fuel consumption whilst the power and performance is unaffected. The remarkable new Power Drive delivers the same power as a conventional driveline, but with 15- to 25% less fuel usage, depending on operating environment, and with lower noise pollution.

Smarter Where It Matters
For Konecranes, fuel saving technologies, without compromising on the performance, has always been a focus by heart. In 2013 we launched the world’s first Hybrid Reach stacker, which reduces fuel consumption by between 30 and 50% and reduced CO2 emissions by an impressive 20 kg per running hour.

Customers now have the option to place a Power Drive system in the new machine they order, and, as Andreas Falk Sales and Marketing Director of Konecranes Business Unit Lift Trucks points out, “Customers who take advantage of this new feature will find that savings in fuel costs will according to our estimates have paid for the Power Drive in about 6 months or less.”
