Team Nortal won Konecranes' third hackathon competition

0

The winning team presented a solution answering the challenge of improving information flow related to material flow in ports. The solution included a mobile application for truck drivers, with backend data collection.

“The winning solution was very practical – a practical functioning solution for a practical problem,” says Juha Pankakoski, Chief Digital Officer, Konecranes. “The solution has good applicability and can easily be deployed and distributed in actual working environment. It can also be definitely developed further.”

“The idea was quite simple, but we spent a lot of time calculating the business case behind it. We wanted to make sure that the solution actually creates value for Konecranes,” the team Nortal explained.

The winning application is set to optimize cargo pickup. The demo included a calendar view and a function that allows the truck driver to schedule an optimal time for cargo pickup. The application is set to improve efficiency and waiting time as well as cut costs. Reducing waiting times by one per cent can result in significant savings as cargo volumes are high.

Chinese One Belt One Road initiative reaches SOHAR

Mr Dong Yanze of the Ports Administration of Shenzhen Municipality and a delegation of other high-ranking Chinese officials attended the ceremony.

Both ports play a critical role in their respective regions and the agreement coincides with China’s construction of twenty-first century maritime silk route networks, providing a timely opportunity for deepening cooperation on both sides. The agreement covers the development of mutually beneficial trade and shipping business and will help to increase understanding and relations in areas that include port planning and construction, management and operations, environmental protection, information technology, personnel training and port security.

CEO Mark Geilenkirchen summed up the importance of this agreement from SOHAR perspective: “The Middle East plays a critical role in the Chinese One Belt One Road initiatives to develop modern land and maritime silk routes, that will stretch from Shanghai all the way to Hamburg; thanks to the prime location of SOHAR outside the Strait of Hormuz, we are ideally placed to act as an important nodal hub on these maritime routes, as from here cargo can be directed though the Suez Canal or around the Cape, depending on vessel size and final destination. We are naturally delighted that Shenzen Port has recognised this and we will be working closely with them and the other main ports in China to develop closer ties and more business as we move forward.”

In October, Mark Geilenkirchen was invited as keynote speaker to the China International Logistics Forum in Shenzhen, and spoke to Chinese officials about the development of One Belt One Road and the potential role that Oman could play in its development. With the support of SOHAR container terminal operators Hutchison Ports, part of the Hong Kong based multinational group, both sides have been working to strengthen ties. The deal signed today formalises the establishment of a sister-port relationship, and commits the management of both ports to maintain regular contact and send their staff for exchange visits to discuss details of interest to both sides, including recommending business partners to one other and promoting broader exchanges and cooperation across their respective regions.

Naval Base automates control of forklift truckfleet with Hyster Tracker

Babcock provides 24/7 support for the largest naval base in Western Europe, where many of its 80 Hyster® forklift trucks are operating on a multi-shift basis. For convenient, automated fleet management, the trucks have all been fitted with the Hyster Tracker telematics system.

“Our trucks have diverse roles across the site as we have almost every type of materials handling operation here, from ship maintenance to logistical ship support,” says Mark Jackson, Logistics Centre of Excellence Manager, Babcock International Group. “Using the Hyster Trackerâ„¢ telematics system has automated control of our fleet, helping to support our existing processes which focus on safety and efficiency.”

The Babcock fleet includes Hyster® warehouse equipment ranging from reach trucks, electric counterbalance and pallet trucks through to various ICE trucks including higher capacity lift trucks. A new Hyster® Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) machine has also been introduced to work in a store which has racking over 10m high, alongside existing Hyster® VNA equipment.

With several hundred drivers, many of which are multi-skilled to operate various equipment within the fleet, Hyster Tracker ensures that only appropriately trained drivers can use the equipment by presenting their RFID site security/ID card.
The Hyster Tracker system transmits a range of data from the trucks via GSM which can be accessed via a secure online portal, HysterTracker.com. The portal allows clear, customisable reports, tables and graphs to be viewed and created. The data helps managers to enhance productivity, control costs and optimise their fleet using accurate business intelligence.

“We can see trends and peaks,” says Mark. “Some trucks are used less frequently for very specialised operations, and the reporting helps us to manage asset decisions according to over or under-utilisation.”

The system can also enforce pre-shift safety checks requiring the operator to complete a series of verifications on a control panel before a truck can be started. It reassures Babcock that drivers are complying with all legal requirements to carry out appropriate checks before starting work. For convenience, the questions included in the pre-use checks can be edited and managed via the secure online portal.

“Our focus is on maximum truck availability and reliability in a port environment which can be tough on trucks,” says Mark, explaining that should any issues be identified in the pre-shift check or through the fault code monitoring feature, Hyster Tracker ensures they can be addressed immediately, helping to reduce potential downtime. Automated email alerts can also be produced in the event of an impact to help investigation and management of any incidents that could occur.

In addition, the idle shutdown function is used to power off trucks after a pre-determined amount of time if the equipment is tracked as idle or unattended, helping to monitor and reduce fuel and power costs.

Prior to introducing the latest fleet, Mark visited the factory in Craigavon, Northern Ireland, where Hyster® counterbalance equipment is manufactured. Sea salt, seagulls and weather extremes are tough on trucks, particularly for those parked on the sea wall, so the build quality of the Hyster® equipment is very important. Features such as oil immersed brakes have helped Babcock maintain maximum availability of the fleet in tough and challenging applications.

“Babcock’s operations require a diverse fleet across a diverse site,” says David Worboys, Corporate Account Manager from Briggs Equipment, the Hyster distribution partner for the UK, which has two engineers based permanently on site to provide support.
“Working closely with Babcock to understand these unique needs means we have been able to identify the tough Hyster® trucks that are best for each different application, while helping to maintain efficiency and manage costs.”
Babcock were winners of the FLTA Safe Site Award 2013 as a result of the safety initiatives implemented, including the use of telematics on the site.

Konecranes signs agreement with Columbus McKinnon Corp regarding the STAHL CraneSystems business

Additionally, Columbus McKinnon assumes unfunded pension liabilities that were estimated at EUR 74 million as of July 31, 2016, during the divestment process. Konecranes expects to book an after-tax capital gain of approximately EUR 190 million upon closing of the STAHL Divestment.

The STAHL Divestment relates to the European Commission’s approval of Konecranes’ pending acquisition of Terex Corporation’s (“Terex”) MHPS business (“MHPS Acquisition”), which is conditional on Konecranes divesting its STAHL CraneSystems business.

Furthermore, Konecranes and Terex are not allowed to close the MHPS Acquisition until the Commission has approved the buyer of the STAHL CraneSystems business.

STAHL CraneSystems is a global supplier of hoisting technology and crane components. The company is well-known for its capability to build engineered system solutions. Its customers include distributors, crane builders as well as EPC companies. STAHL CraneSystems is headquartered in Künzelsau, Germany. In 2016, STAHL CraneSystems’ sales outside the Konecranes Group are estimated to total approximately EUR 135 million and the pro forma EBITDA on a stand-alone basis is estimated to be somewhat below EUR 30 million. STAHL CraneSystems has approximately 650 employees around the world.

The STAHL Divestment, which is expected to close prior to April 30, 2017, is subject to the European Commission’s approval of Columbus McKinnon as a suitable purchaser, the German Bundeskartellamt’s merger control approval, as well as the closing of MHPS Acquisition.

Konecranes will use the proceeds from the STAHL CraneSystems divestment to amortize loans related to the MHPS Acquisition.
“We are very pleased to announce this transaction. It is an important milestone in making progress toward closing the MHPS Acquisition. We are satisfied that we could achieve this strategic milestone in a timely manner, thereby minimizing the period of uncertainty for the STAHL CranesSystems business and personnel,” says Panu Routila, President and CEO of Konecranes.
