Tentative settlement in Rotterdam strike but pilot strike in Belgium continues

This week it is expected that the backlog of shipping that was created in Northern Europe due to a strike by container lashers in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and a slowdown by Belgian marine pilots will somewhat ease. Unions representing the container lashers working at Rotterdam’s main container terminals report that they have reached a settlement over wages, while the Belgian pilots continue to work after pausing their job action.

Governor Newsom vetoes a ban on public funding for terminal automation at LA/Long Beach

It has been reported that California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill to limit the powers of the air-quaility regulator for the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach – despite a lobbying campaign by the US West Coast’s powerful longshore union. The bill contained a provision to ban public funding for terminal automation technology in San Pedro Bay, which dockers believe to be a threat to their jobs.

China’s reciprocal port fee programme starts to bite shipping lines

On 14 October, China’s reciprocal port fee programme was launched and was having an immediate impact as carriers reported they were diverting ships, and others were receiving hefty bills.

Shipping lines Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd were the first to react, announcing “temporary changes” for two US-flagged vessels on their Asian routes. “We will be making changes to the TP7 rotation to make sure your supply chains continue to run as smoothly as possible, if you are utilising this service” Maersk announced in a customer advisory.
