DEME wins IADC Safety Award 2016

Each year IADC (International Association of Dredging Companies) honors one of its member companies that has shown outstanding achievement in the area of safety. The IADC Safety Award is intended to encourage the development of safety skills on the job and to reward people and companies who demonstrate special diligence in safety awareness.

The 2016 IADC Safety Award for ‘Neptune’s’ “enhanced muster station” was presented to Lieven Durt, Director QHSE-S DEME, and Luc Vandenbulcke, Managing Director GeoSea, at IADC’s Annual General Meeting that took place recently in Cascais, Portugal. The jack-up vessel Neptune is being deployed by GeoSea, DEME’s subsidiary specialised in complex offshore marine engineering projects.

The muster station on board of jack-up vessel ‘Neptune’ was enhanced by painting numbered circles on deck. It is efficient during drills and emergency situations and it helps provide a quick overview of the number of people gathered at the muster station, the number of missing people and a way to identify those who are missing. This enhanced muster station can be applicable to all vessels and can be implemented at low cost (only a paint job) and with minimum effort.

Lieven Durt, Director QHSE-S at DEME said: “The idea, initiated by captain Dirk Pauwels of the ‘Neptune’, already received a DEME Innovation Award and it is being implemented over the entire DEME fleet. It is a great recognition of the captain’s leadership and it will motivate colleagues like him to promote safety in a similarly creative and appealing way. The IADC Safety Award will therefore be seen not only as a reward for the efforts of the vessel’s team, but also for that of the whole company.”

The shipment carrying two new 9-wide ASCs arrived at DPW in project schedule and in perfect condition. The two ASCs were transported fully-erected from China to Australia and unloaded in Brisbane in July. This delivery completes Module 1 which is an addition to existing seven ASC modules.

“The arrival of the vessel carrying two fully-erected ASCs was really impressive. DP World and Kalmar staff alike were excited to watch as the vessel pulled into the port. Kalmar would like to congratulate and thank everyone involved,” comments Jyri Saarijoki, Project Director, Kalmar. He continues “The successful shipment of fully-erected cranes from China to Australia with efficient delivery onto the terminal is an important milestone for Kalmar and validates the method as an efficient and proven concept.”

The delivery of the two Kalmar ASCs marks the fourth successful fully erected ASC shipment from China to Australia. To date, Kalmar has provided DP World in Brisbane 16 Kalmar ASCs and 16 Kalmar shuttle carriers integrated with Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS). The two new ASCs bring the number of modules servicing container trade to eight and increasing capacity by 14 percent to 720,000 TEU.

The non-exclusive cross-distribution arrangements between the companies remain valid. Konecranes will continue to sell Kito manual products (chain hoists and lever hoists) using the Konecranes brands, whereas Kito will continue to sell wire rope hoists made by Konecranes under its own brands.

The dissolution of the strategic alliance will allow Kito to participate in the bidding process for STAHL CraneSystems that Konecranes has committed to divest in relation to its pending acquisition of Terex’s MHPS business.

Kito has on September 26, 2016, announced that it will conduct a share repurchase of 5,950,000 shares on September 27, 2016. Konecranes has notified Kito that, due to the dissolution of the alliance, it will tender all its 5,950,000 Kito shares to be repurchased by Kito.

Kito has been consolidated as an associated company in Konecranes’ financial reporting.
