DP World reports 3 per cent rise in gross container volumes

0

The company’s gross volumes totalled 61.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2015, up from 59.9m TEU in 2014, helped by growth in European and UAE terminals, it said in a statement. Annual consolidated volumes, at terminals over which DP World has control, were 29.1m TEU, 2.7 per cent higher on a reported basis and up 1.7 per cent higher on a like-for-like basis. The operator said like-for-like gross throughput growth was flat year-on-year in the final quarter of 2015 as the market conditions in the second half were challenging after “various economic headwinds including currency weakness and lower commodity prices adversely impacted trade growth.” “Despite the uncertain near-term macro environment and given the high utilisation at our portfolio, we remain confident about the medium- to long-term outlook of our industry and continue to invest to meet the future capacity requirements of our customers. As we look
ahead into 2016, we look forward to the new capacity at Rotterdam (Netherlands), Mumbai (India), Prince Rupert (Canada) and Yarimca (Turkey) to deliver a full year contribution to our throughput,” stated Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman and also the new CEO of the group. The company also expects to open its third berth at London Gateway in mid-2016, adding 600,000 TEU of new capacity. An additional 2m TEU at terminal three in Dubai’s Jebel Ali is slated to go operational in the second half of the year. One of the biggest port operators in the world, DP World has a portfolio of 70 terminals in 31 countries and a market capitalisation of $14.8 billion. CEO appointment In another development, the company appointed chairman Bin Sulayem as chief executive officer with immediate effect, according to a bourse statement. The announcement comes two weeks after he took interim charge following the retirement of the former CEO. On Jan. 27, the company announced long-serving chief executive Mohammed Sharaf had retired.

A total of 12 tugs were involved in the operation. First the ship was made lighter by pumping off fuel and ballast. Dredgers and water jets prepared the ground around the ship for refloating. The tide, higher than normal, provided additional help for the operation.

Ben Lodemann, chairman of the Lotsenbrüderschaft Elbe pilot’s association praised the teamwork from all those involved: “Once again we have seen that in this special situation on the Elbe, all emergency services worked very professionally and effectively together, making the Elbe very safe pilotage waters.”

The CSCL Indian Ocean, with its cargo of up to 18,900 TEU (standard containers), is one of the largest containerships in the world. A technical defect occurred in the steering gear on the evening of 3 February off Lühesand, a small island in the River Elbe. On the advice of the Elbe pilots the ship was brought to the north edge of the fairway. This manoeuvre enabled the navigation channel to be kept open for shipping. Possible damage on the south edge of the navigation channel was avoided.

RAM delivers 49 spreaders to APM Terminals TEC2 in Lazaro Cardenas

0

APM Terminals won a 32 year concession in Lazaro Cardenas with an investment of approximately USD900 million to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the new specialised semi-automated deep-water container terminal. The project is 3 phased, which in its first phase will have a capacity of 1.2 million TEU. The semi-automated facility will be a first of its kind in Latin America. Mexico´s government is determined to double port capacity within the next 6 years and APMT TEC2 will play a fundamental role in reaching this goal.

RAM Spreaders has a proven record of over 40 years of experience supplying robust, high performance and reliable crane spreaders to all major global port operators worldwide.

Additionally, RAM spreaders has a complete team of professionals in the region to provide sales and after sales service support whenever is required. RAM’s senior Latin American management team is based in the region to provide local support and close contact with customers.

Based on purely technical and operational requirements, RAM Spreaders developed a set of STS and ARMG spreader solutions geared to satisfy cost effectively the long term needs of APM Terminals.

An important part of the order for Lazaro Cardenas is the RAM SingFlex Single Hoist Twin-40 Headblock for STS Cranes, first of its kind in Latin America. It brings outstanding performance, control and future proof capabilities to handle containers in twin 40ft mode, avoiding the need for expensive and complex dual hoist cranes. All APM Terminals TEC2’s ship to shore cranes were shipped from factory, ready to use RAM’s Twin40 Headblock.

Finally, a common feature among all RAM spreaders is its technological electrical open source platform. All the spreader functions are controlled by ASi communications. This simplifies the installation of electrical components, providing efficient diagnostics and making it easy to feed data to the crane’s control system. This all in itself translates into easier and low cost of maintenance over time.

RAM Spreaders will continue to serve and strengthen the relation globally to provide nothing but high quality standards of equipment and service.
