New Joint Venture Agreement established for Jasper Ocean Terminal

0

“Whether we’re celebrating another business expansion or record-breaking year for exports, South Carolina’s economy is on the move thanks to a world class ports system that drives our economic development engine,” said South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. “As South Carolina and Georgia renew this commitment to make the Jasper Ocean Terminal a reality, we have an incredible opportunity to strengthen our ports system – and that’s a great thing, not only for the people of Jasper County but for the entire state.”

“This agreement shows significant progress in our commitment to support economic development in our region,” said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. “We must expand port infrastructure in the fast-growing U.S. Southeast to accommodate future demand in manufacturing and retail. Our current investments in logistics infrastructure such as the ports will ensure that our states remain at the forefront of these industries so that we not only grow today but that we continue to grow for decades to come.”

The updated agreement governs the permitting and planning process for the JOT, including the development of terminal design and supporting infrastructure, plans for financing, and execution of the operational decisions required during the permitting process.

The JOT Joint Project Office was first established under an intergovernmental agreement signed in 2008 by the previous Governors of Georgia and South Carolina. This new agreement takes effect immediately and continues the work of the JOT.

“I am greatly encouraged with the signing of this agreement as the next step of the continuing cooperation and progress between Georgia and South Carolina toward the ultimate goal of building a Jasper Ocean Terminal, said David J Posek, Chairman of the Jasper Ocean Terminal Board of Directors. “It establishes the framework between our two states to work together over the
next decade.”

A work plan for the 2016 fiscal year was adopted earlier this year by the JOT Board of Directors. The plan includes geotechnical studies and conceptual work on terminal design by Moffatt & Nichol, the Project Manager and the year is expected to culminate with a permit application to the US Army Corps of Engineers for the new terminal and channel modification study.

The software allows for better analysis of dynamic processes and visualization of operational processes through 3D animations. Moffatt & Nichol has successfully used FlexTerm on a number of terminals, including fully automated container terminals.

Yoder has more than 20 years of engineering management and technical expertise in web technologies, networking, security, simulation, high-performance computing and video gaming. Prior to Moffatt & Nichol, Mr. Yoder owned his own consulting firm where he provided business strategy consulting, architecture and hands-on coding for security, call center, social media and high performance computing clients. Mr. Yoder was also the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of US Networx, which provided network protocol analyzers and other PC-based tools and he was the originator of The Norton AntiVirus at Peter Norton Computing. He was also the Chief Architect at
EarthLink.

“Brian’s vast software technology knowledge will help our port clients make critical decisions that will optimize the long-term viability of marine terminal facilities – especially those moving toward automation or expansion,” said Moffatt & Nichol Senior Port Planner Ashebir Jacob, PE.

Mr. Yoder obtained his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Central Michigan University. He is a member of the Los Angeles CTO Forum, a technical advisor for the investment network Tech Coast Angels, and serves on the boards of advisors of several technology startups.

New lighting system reduces energy by 81%

0

Officials wanted a lighting solution that minimized maintenance expenses, reduced operating costs, and supported the organization’s sustainability efforts. They also wanted to partner with a company that would provide them with a long-term warranty on parts and labor.

Newport Docks is one of ABP’s first large scale upgrades to LED lighting. That’s why officials wanted to work with a company with the expertise with the LED light source and the unique needs of its port operations. ABP determined Musco’s Green Generation Lighting® system with an LED light source was ideal for ABP’s needs. The new system provides a more uniform and better quality of a clean, white light, and significantly increased overall illumination levels, while reducing glare for vessel operators.

With the installation of fixed mounting brackets, and the removal of the existing raise and lowering rings, ABP is able to save significant costs by eliminating annual health safety inspections required for mobile rings. Additionally, Musco’s system approach to lighting includes remote electrical enclosures mounted on the lower part of the pole for improved reliability and serviceability. Operating costs are also reduced with the long life of the LED light source and a 10-year parts and labor warranty.

The system is equipped with Musco’s Control-Link® controls and monitoring system allowing for remote on/off and dimming functions. ABP officials are pleased with the dimming capabilities because, while the port will often operate 24/7, it only requires higher light levels for one hour each night for operations.

DEME secures several new dredging contracts

The execution of the contracts will start immediately and will happen on a tight schedule. The new series of international contracts are an important reaffirmation of global customers’ trust in DEME’s dredging expertise.

Commissioned by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), DEME will dredge a side channel of 9.5 km long, 250m wide and 18.5m deep providing access to the eastern part of Port Said’s port. Both ‘Congo River’ and ‘Nile River’ will execute the deepening dredging works. The project is carried out by the consortium Dredging International (DEME Group) and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (US), which realised lot 6 for the expansion of the Suez Canal earlier this year. Port Said is one of Egypt’s most important ports on the Mediterranean. Thanks to the new eastern side canal, ships sailing to and from Port Said will no longer interfere with maritime convoys of the nearby Suez Canal.

In Panama, DEME will work in assignment for AutoridadCanal de Panama (ACP) on the further widening and deepening of the pacific  entrance to the Panama Canal where DEME already worked between 2009 and 2012. The planned maintenance (‘Lange Wapper’) and deepening dredging works (‘D’Artagnan’) are meant to facilitate the increasing shipping traffic and the arrival of larger ships (type Post-Panamax) through the connecting canal. The existing entrance southbound of the Americas Bridge will be broadened over a distance of 7km by 37 metres on both sides, making the total width 300m.

DEME has also won an important contract for facilitating access to Mersin International Port (MIP) on the Mediterranean in southern Turkey. The contract will be executed with MIP which is a joint venture between the Port of Singapore Authority and the Turkish infrastructure investment holding Akfen. The container terminal in Mersin International Port is currently under expansion. As a result, the port will receive more and bigger ships with deeper draught. DEME’s dredging works carried out by ‘Amazone’ and ‘Uilenspiegel’ over the next 7 months will guarantee easy accessibility through the widening and deepening of the approach channel, the turning circle as well as the basin and berth approach channel.
