SmartLoad helps improve mooring safety at Port Taranaki

0

The company utilised its innovative SmartLoad 2Ex technology for Zone 2 hazardous areas to improve safety and significantly reduce the risk of mooring incidents.

Port Taranaki has a long history of mooring difficulties and experiences long period waves (LPW) which excites the motion of moored vessels, increasing the loadings and the possibility of breaking the mooring lines. Together with MetOcean Solutions Limited – a local oceanographic company, the port has developed a predictive model in calculating the loadings during LPW, but as the effect is different for every berth, data is required to calibrate calculations for loading events.

To help ensure the integrity of the mooring lines and continuously monitor the load, Scotload applied its extensive knowledge of load monitoring solutions to replicate the pins in the port’s existing boss mooring links and incorporate its SmartLoad® technology, which includes load intelligence directly on the mooring links, to deliver accurate load monitoring results in real-time.

“Ships in Port Taranaki are subject to long period wave surge” explians Peter Atkinson, port planning manager at Port Taranaki. “Predictive models are used to forecast events but we wanted to increase efforts in better managing our response to these events. One of the parameters by which we are monitoring moored vessels is the mooring line tension which is why we approached Scotload, for their expertise in this field.”

The newly developed load monitoring boss mooring links now store mooring line tension data directly on the links themselves and export it for input into the predictive model. The adapted links were also supplied with a SmartLoad 2Ex handset and standard SmartLoad software.

“Our excellent cooperation with Bolloré continues. We have 69 RTGs either delivered or under production, to container terminals operated by Bolloré Group in West Africa, and with this new order the total will reach 82,” says Antoine Bosquet, Sales Director Port Cranes, Konecranes. “Bolloré is going from strength to strength in Africa and Konecranes is proud to be part of it.”

The thirteen RTG cranes will be equipped with Konecranes’ smarter cabin offering improved ergonomics, visibility and safety. They will also have advanced Konecranes technology such as Autosteering, which keeps the crane on a pre-programmed, straight driving path, and Variable Speed Engine and Diesel Fuel Saver technology. Taken together, these features help to improve operating safety and increase productivity.

The RTG container positioning systems will be connected to the ports’ Terminal Operating Systems offering correct, real-time container positioning and an accurate inventory. The RTG cranes will also be equipped with TRUCONNECT remote access technology, enabling remote diagnostics for maintenance purposes.

The hydraulics-free, 16-wheel RTGs have a lifting capacity of 40 tonnes stacking 1-over-5 containers high and 7 plus truck lane wide.

APM Terminals invests in new infrastructure in Italy

The new terminal, the first new major port construction in Italy in several decades, is scheduled to open in January 2018 with an annual throughput capacity of 800,000 TEU, and the ability to handle vessels up to 18,000 TEU capacity.

The Italian government is providing EUR 300 million for civil works for the project. APM Terminals is investing EUR 150 million in the new terminal which will create 450 new jobs when operations commence. In 2014, the ports of northern Italy’s Liguria range, including La Spezia, Genoa and Savona/Vado, handled a combined 3.5 million TEU, representing an increase of approximately 6% compared with the previous year.

“This crane and container handling equipment order is a very important milestone in the development of APM Terminals Vado, and the future of the Savona-Vado area” stated APM Terminals Vado Managing Director Carlo Merli, adding “this shore side infrastructure is essential to the development of new logistics networks and inland transportation possibilities for Italy as the Ligurian coast becomes accessible to the global shipping fleet’s largest vessels”.

Vessels of up to 14,000 TEU capacity are now calling the Ligurian coast facilities as larger container ships are introduced into the Far East/Europe trade lane, the world’s busiest. The APM Terminals Global Terminal Network, the largest terminal operator in the Mediterranean Sea, is expanding into the Ligurian coast as part of the port’s master plan to create new global supply chain access to markets in Northern Italy, Southern France, Switzerland and Germany.

The new terminal, which will handle both containerized and liquid bulk cargoes, will be integrated operationally with the existing 275,000 annual TEU capacity Vado Reefer Terminal facility, which was acquired by APM Terminals in August 2015. The STS cranes are expected for delivery in March of 2017, while the ARMGs are scheduled to arrive the following month.
