SeaLand and APL Select Port Everglades for Service to Latin America

0

SeaLand, an ocean freight shipping company recently revived by Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, and APL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, a global transportation and logistics company, selected Florida International
Terminal, LLC (FIT) at Port Everglades to provide cargo handling and stevedoring services. The new service is expected to generate more than 20,000 container moves annually.

“The joint SeaLand/APL service is an excellent fit because Port Everglades is already a leader in the North-South trade lanes, particularly the perishables market, and the company is positioned to grow with us as we deepen and widen our channels and add berths for larger cargo ships,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven Cernak. Port Everglades is investing more than $600 million in waterside improvements, and in the last year celebrated the opening of a 43-acre intermodal rail container transfer
facility and a multitude of road improvements.

SeaLand/APL’s NAE/ACX service will arrive in Port Everglades as a first-in call every Thursday from Manzanillo, Panama, before sailing to other U.S. East Coast ports and returning on Sundays as a last-out U.S. call before sailing to Cartagena, Colombia.

Considered a pioneer in the container shipping industry, SeaLand, which Maersk acquired in 1999, opened its headquarters in Broward County, FL, in the city of Miramar, earlier this year.

At the crossroads of north-south and east-west trade, Broward County’s Port Everglades is Florida’s leading container port, handling more than one million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units, the industry standard measurement for container volumes) and serving as a gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Located within the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach, Florida, Port Everglades is in the heart of one of the world’s largest consumer regions, including a constant flow of visitors and up to a combined 110 million residents and seasonal visitors within a 500-mile radius. Port Everglades has direct access to the interstate highway system and the 43-acre Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) intermodal hub, and is closer to the Atlantic Shipping Lanes than any other Southeastern U.S. port. Ongoing capital improvements and expansion will ensure that Port Everglades can continue to handle future growthin container traffic. A world-class cargo handling facility, Port Everglades serves as an ideal point of entry and departure for products shipped around the world.

Port of Saipan update – Typhoon Soudelor

0

As a result of the restrictions, the Port of Saipan will accept vessels during daytime hours from Friday 7 August, with no docking and undocking before sunrise and after sunset. Until further notice, port operations for loading and unloading operations will also occur during daytime hours only. The restrictions apply to all types of vessel. Typhoon Soudelor hit Saipan on Sunday 2 August – the first time a typhoon has hit the island since 1968. The island still has no water or electricity and a state of Major Disaster and Significant Emergency has been declared for Saipan, Tinian, Rota and the Northern Islands. Saipan is the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean, a commonwealth of the United States. ISS Guam will continue to monitor developments and keep its clients
updated.

£1million investment to boost Port of Sunderland

Port of Sunderland has announced that Jubilee Quay – the third largest of its eleven quays – will be redeveloped, with a new asphalt hardstanding that will allow it to be used for the shipments of bulk and project cargoes. The project, which will see earthworks, surfacing and drainage work carried out on the site, will allow the port to take on more business, and it is hoped that – in the longer term – it will make the port a more attractive inward investment proposition.

Port of Sunderland, which is owned by Sunderland City Council, has also commissioned the construction of two new lighting masts and provision of a new dockside handrail, which will ensure the site remains operational when light levels are low. Work will be undertaken by North East construction business Owen Pugh.

Matthew Hunt, director of Port of Sunderland, said that the redevelopment project – expected to take three months to complete, was another step forward for the port, which has seen its fortunes transformed since his arrival in 2010.

Mr Hunt said: “Port of Sunderland is a fast-growing port, and infrastructure projects such as this one serve to accelerate that growth, allowing us to take on more business, and expand our capabilities.

“We have seen an extensive programme of investment at Port of Sunderland, and all of this is helping to create new opportunities for us, and to unlock the vast potential that exists here. With more of our quays becoming operational, and of course, some of the major investment made to date – that has included the purchase of two cranes, one a heavy-lift crane, and of course the recent reconnection of our rail lines – we are more capable than ever and better placed than ever before to compete on a bigger stage.”

The 120m long quay is located in the port’s Hudson Dock, on the west side of the port. The area is connected to the port’s newly reinstated rail lines and will be an ideal location for handling rail-borne cargoes to and from the port.

The latest project, worth some £400,000 follows major work at the port’s Greenwell’s Quay – located on the northern side of the port – which has also been resurfaced, with around 4,500m2 of concrete hardstanding. The combined value of the contracts is almost £1million.
