. The biggest container ship in the UASC fleet, the mega-ship arrived at the UK’s largest container port from Port Kelang in Malaysia. The Barzan is deployed on UASC’s AEC1 service between Asia and North Europe.

Commenting on the new arrival, Clemence Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Felixstowe and Managing Director of HPH Europe division, said:

“We are delighted to welcome the latest vessel in the UASC fleet to the port of Felixstowe. Our investment in new infrastructure, equipment, systems and people has ensured that we are the clear port-of-choice for the latest generation of mega vessels employed on the Asian trade.

“Our ability to handle these huge vessels will be further enhanced when the Berth 9 extension is completed at the end of the year. Beyond that we will continue to enhance facilities and improve still further levels of productivity. UASC’s commitment to reducing environmental impact with this new class of LNG-ready vessels mirrors our own commitment to reduce emissions and the carbon footprint of our business.”

The Barzan, named the world’s most environmentally friendly ultra large container vessel, is the first of a series of six 18,800 teu vessels being acquired by UASC for the Asia – Europe trade. Barzan is also a part of the industry’s first LNG-ready fleet and will set new standards for fuel and energy efficiency, due to optimized vessel design and an array of efficiency technologies. Preliminary calculations indicate an EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) value that is close to 50% below the 2025 limit set by IMO.The new class of vessel has an overall length of 400 metres, breadth of 58.68 metres, depth of 30.6 metres and a draught of 16 metres.

As well as Felixstowe, the AEC1 service calls at Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Port Kelang, Rotterdam, and Hamburg.

0

While the construction of the new Suez Canal approaching its final phase, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), is operating the following programme due to current dredging operations, with digging and dredging expected to be concluded by 15 July:

– During the dredging period, only one convoy is allowed inside the Suez canal – a convoy will not enter the canal until another convoy exits from Port Said or Suez.
– Convoy timings are being decided by the SCA on a daily basis.
– The SCA is currently operating only one convoy from the north and one per south daily
– Time of entering the canal is changeable as per the SCA daily decision
– To minimise disruption during this final dredging period the Suez canal is not stopping or closing, but reorganising convoy timings as above

The new Suez canal measures from 60 kilometres in length to 95 kilometres in length, while the project also involves deepening and widening the Great Bitter Lakes and Ballah bypass to a total length of 37 kilometres.

On completion, the new Suez Canal will create a new parallel waterway to the existing one, increasing the doubled parts of the Suez Canal by 50 per cent. The SCA has also advised that the new channel will accommodate vessels with up to a 24 metres draught and is widening the existing western bypasses to 317 metres. Other project objectives detailed by the SCA for the new Suez Canal include:

– Shortening the transit time from 18 hours to 11 hours for the southbound convoy
– Minimising waiting time for vessels to three hours instead of eight to eleven hours
– Increasing the daily average of transiting vessels to 97 ships from 49 by 2023
– Achieving direct unstopped transmit for 45 ships in both directions
