Hawaii celebrates completion of Kawaihae Harbor Pier 2

The new improvements resurfaced 3.1 acres of cargo yard area at Pier 2, relocated the Harbors Division Office/Maintenance Facility and comfort station structures and made infrastructure improvements to lighting, fire-protection and drainage at an approximate construction cost of USD 7 million in state funds. Energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures were added to the cargo yard area, along with photovoltaic panels on the new structures to help reduce energy usage.

“The new container yard provides additional space for cargo containers and increases operational acreage here by twelve percent,” said HDOT Director Ford Fuchigami. “This additional capacity will help to keep up with the demands of our growing communities and improve the Big Island’s resiliency during natural disasters.”

Approximately 80% of all goods are imported into the state, and of that total, 98% arrives through their commercial harbors.

JLT commences shipment of industry's highest performance 10-inch vehicle-mount PC

It extends the performance of the VERSO rugged computers already shipping, by providing even more compute power in the most compact and robust form-factor.

Mobile computing is rapidly becoming the preferred solution for users in many vertical markets, thanks to its convenience. However, while many Tablet computers provide access to fun or useful applications, the real power of mobile computing is having access to advanced software, often also used in the back office, while working in harsh environments.

Running powerful software applications requires powerful processors, something that many mobile computers aren’t able to offer due to size, heat dissipation or power restrictions. But through expert design JLT Mobile Computers has managed to increase the performance of the VERSO+ 10 range by integrating the Intel Core processor.

Thanks to JLT’s continued investment in R&D, the VERSO+ 10 range of mobile computers now provides the perfect combination of mobility, performance and robustness. By leveraging the power of the Intel Core processor, end-users effectively have the power of a desktop computer in their mobile environment.

This is the latest extension to the VERSO family of rugged mobile computers, which already includes the 12-inch and 15-inch versions. The VERSO+ 10 features a smaller profile than its close cousins, making it even easier to integrate into space-constrained vehicle cabins, without losing any of their benefits. These include built-in WLAN 802.11 ac/a/b/g/n dual-band and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity with fully integrated and highly sensitive PIFA antennas, giving reliable Local Area and Personal Area communications in even the most harsh and demanding environments. An optional 4G LTE module can be added to provide Wide Area Communications if necessary and the dock can also accommodate Assisted GPS and GLONASS technology.

Thanks to its powerful Core processor, the VERSO+ 10 computer can support a wide range of operating systems including Windows 8.1 Industry, Windows 7 Pro and Windows Embedded Standard 7. With this latest development the VERSO+ 10 range is now available with either the Intel Core i5 processor or a dual-core Intel D2550 processor. The Core processor option offers 8GB DDR3 memory, while both processor options feature a 10-inch sunlight viewable XGA LED display with multi-touch projected capacitive technology. In-built storage comes in the form of a CFast drive and the computer features waterproof stereo speakers and support for HD audio. In both versions the power supply and battery back-up are fully integrated, and supported by JLT’s advanced QuickLock cradle, which significantly simplifies installation in a vehicle while preserving easy access for security purposes.

The overall dimensions of the VERSO+ 10 computer are 251mm (W) x 207mm (H) x 65mm (D), including dock. Total weight is just 2.7kg. Designed for harsh environments, the VERSO+ 10 computer can withstand operating temperature excursions of -30C to +55C, in 10-90% RH. Dust and water ingress is certified to IP65.

Konecranes wins order for nine more RTGs from Port of Houston Authority

When these cranes are commissioned and working, the Port Authority will operate a total of 69 Konecranes RTGs.

The Port of Houston Authority is the largest container port in the Gulf of Mexico. It is responsible for eight cargo terminals and one cruise terminal along the Houston Ship Channel, and in 2014, its terminals handled more than 37 million tons of cargo. Konecranes delivered its first RTGs to the Port Authority in 2003.

The nine Konecranes RTGs on order are high-performance, 16-wheel RTGs with a lifting capacity of 40 LT, a stacking height of 1-over-5, and a stacking width of 6 plus truck lane wide. They will be powered by a primary Tier 4f diesel genset equipped with Konecranes’ Diesel Fuel Saver technology, and an auxiliary diesel genset.

The RTGs will also be equipped with Konecranes’ Active Load Control system, which prevents container sway and significantly improves container-handling performance. The smarter cabin, LED lights and a laser-based gantry anti-collision system complete the package of notable features that will be delivered with these high-performance container cranes.

“We are pleased to provide these new, state-of-the-art RTGs to the Port of Houston Authority,” says Jussi Suhonen, Sales Director, Region Americas, Konecranes/Port Cranes.

The first phase of the Bayport Terminal opened in January 2007 and the terminal is today the most modern and environmentally sound container terminal in the Gulf of Mexico. At full build-out, this state-of-the-art terminal will have a total of seven container ship berths with the capacity to handle 2.3 million TEU a year.

Port of NY/NJ told to sell World Trade Center

During a news conference on Tuesday at Newark Penn Station Senate Democratic leaders made the call to the agency to sell its non-transportation assets, a day after Senate Republicans blocked an override of Governor Chris Christie’s veto of a Port Authority overhaul.

Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg said that bill, which passed both states’ legislatures unanimously last year and was vetoed by both governors in December, would have given lawmakers greater leverage over the authority.

Senate President Steve Sweeney warned that the Amtrak’s Gateway tunnel project connecting northern New Jersey with Manhattan is in danger of failing and that its closure could mean economic havoc for the region.

Sweeney did not detail how Democrats could compel the agency to follow through on the plan, but said it might generate up to USD 3 billion.

The sale would send a message that the agency is serious about fixing transportation infrastructure. “We need to send a signal to the Federal Government that there’s a commitment and there’s an willingness between the two states through the authority that’s responsible for this,” Sweeney said.

This is not the first time officials have called for selling the agency’s real estate.

Christie and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recommended in December that the agency begin selling real estate not connected to transportation, and Senate Republican leader Tom Kean Jr has introduced a Port Authority overhaul measure that makes similar provisions for the authority’s real estate.
