The container cranes were purchased as part of a 30 year strategic plan to boost service levels at the Port Adelaide Terminal. The cranes have an operational outreach of 50m and a safe working load of 65 tonnes under twin lift spreader and 80 tonnes under hook beam. The lift height over rail is 38 m, the span is 25.3 m and the back reach is 20 m.

General Manager of Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal. Mr Peter Cheers commented,

“We conducted rigorous supplier evaluations as part of our procurement process and assessed this in-line with our long-run planning for the terminal. The post-panamax Liebherr cranes were the best match for our requirements and will allow us to maximise the flow-on benefits for our customers.”

The investment in the cranes is part of a series of upgrades at the port that aim to put Port Adelaide on the map as a world class container facility with an annual projected throughput of 700,000 TEU’s and will allow for increased vessel turnaround at the port.

ESPO Secretary General, Isabelle Ryckbost handed over the PERS certificates to the port representatives, Mr Giorgos Anomeritis (Piraeus), Mr Jochen Kress (Bremen/Bremerhaven) and Mr Abd Al Shiyab (Aqaba) respectively. The Port Environmental Review System (PERS) is the only port sector specific environmental management standard and the flagship product of EcoPorts. The certification ceremony took place during an ESPO/EcoPorts workshop on waste reception facilities, which was hosted by the Piraeus Port Authority and which gathered more than 60 experts in the field.

Piraeus Port Authority has been a long a loyal supporter of EcoPorts since 2004, when the port was first certified by PERS. Since then, Piraeus has been continuously demonstrating its environmental management credentials and on 28 March, it was re-certified with PERS for the 4th consecutive time. The ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven joined the network of PERS certificate holders in 2011 and are now successfully recertified after the positive evaluation of their application by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. The port of Aqaba, in Jordan is a new comer in the EcoPorts network and only the second non-EU port that achieves PERS certification over time.

More information about the Port Environmental Review System (PERS) can be found here.
