0

The $16 million project will include drainage and utility improvements, and install new asphalt concrete. Interior improvements will also be made at the Pier 35 building, which will include a new elevator, stairs, offices, air conditioning, a fire alarm system, and electrical improvements.  The renovated building will accommodate the University of Hawaii’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (UH SOEST).

The UH SOEST is transitioning from the Kapalama Military Reservation (KMR) to Pier 35, allowing for construction of new improvements at KMR.  This move will improve Honolulu Harbor’s overall cargo capacity to keep pace with the state’s projected growth.

Anticipated completion of the Pier 34 and 35 improvements is scheduled in spring of 2015.

“Technological innovation and development are priorities for keeping Grup TCB terminals at the forefront of international logistics operations. Our ultimate goal is to offer customers an efficient, flexible and quality service, so we will continue investing in this modernisation strategy”, says Xavier Soucheiron, CEO of Grup TCB.

At TCBuen, the Group’s terminal at the Port of Buenaventura (Colombia) signed orders for the purchase of six RTG (container stacking cranes on tyres) and an STS (Ship-to-Shore). In addition, two RS (Reachstackers), one ECH (empty container stacker), six TT (Terminal Trucks) and six TC (Terminal Chassis) have been operational since last summer. The terminal is undergoing its second phase of development, which almost double its capacity to 600,000 TEUs moved annually.

At TCEEGE, its Turkish terminal, Grup TCB has purchased two ECH, one of which is already operational, and has rented two RS.

At the Valencia Container Terminal (TCV) four new RTG cranes have been operational since December, in addition to the five TT and five TC operating since last summer.

In addition, Grup TCB rented an RS for its Railway Terminal at Valladolid.

In parallel, the company invested 1.5 million in 2013 to improve and renew existing equipment. In this sense, an electrical retrofit was carried out on an STS at the Yucatan Container Terminal and an order has already been placed for the same terminal for a second STS and a mobile crane. At the same time, the mobile crane at CAPSA (Compañía Auxiliar del Puerto de Tenerife) was also upgraded.

Meanwhile, the Barcelona Container Terminal (TCB) introduced a new fleet management system including GPS, access control and stability alarm management. At the same terminal, a Spanish patent has been granted for container weight control during loading and unloading operations.

Finally, Grup TCB has developed new software internally for Maintenance Management which was implemented at TCBuen, TCB and CAPSA during 2013. In 2014 the new management standard and improved maintenance is expected to be implemented at TCG (Gijón Container Terminal), TCEEGE, IDD and TCV.

WSS invests in Asia to support increased offshore oil & gas activity

The first new WSS supply point, at Songkhla, southern Thailand opened in January 2014 and other locations have been identified to enable WSS to work closer to areas of emerging demand. New supply sites are under consideration in Kemaman, Malaysia, Balikpapan, Indonesia and in Myanmar.

Countries including Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar present strong regional growth potential, with marginal and deepwater fields continuing to drive the investment in upstream assets. Malaysia and Indonesia have already put in place policies to attract additional investment in oil and gas production and Myanmar is due to announce the winning bidders for its deepwater blocks in the first quarter of 2014.

Joe Peng, Offshore Account Manager Asia-Pacific, WSS, says the company’s focus on safety and its strong network are natural advantages in a region where the offshore sector is still growing.

“This is a complex market with a diverse customer base, ranging from oilfield operators, drilling contractors, production operators to offshore support companies. Close engagement over the past 12 months enables us to understand their challenges of operating in such a diverse and often remote geographical location. Their top three concerns are safety, logistics issues and reliability, subjects where WSS can bring value and vast knowledge.”

A surge in spending on exploration and production globally is also driving newbuilding orders at shipyards in China, South Korea and Singapore, as an ageing fleet is being renewed with higher specification assets.

WSS’s offer to offshore customers reflects the need for tailored product supply. By listening to customer feedback the offshore team determined a growing concern over drop-risks on offshore installations. In response, WSS offers a dual purpose DNV-certified rack system that provides safety in lifting and storage of gas cylinders and can also be transformed into a manifold rack for charging of accumulators.

WSS has also made available the Cleanrig HP RTU (Rigwash) system in a 1,000 litre tote tank in addition to the usual 200 litre drum. As a market leader in supply of marine chemicals, WSS has been able to transfer its knowledge to the offshore market, helping customers rectify fuel oil contamination issues with the provision of treatment systems and technical know-how.
