Kalmar to refurbish a ship-to-shore crane for Belawan International Container Terminal in Medan, Indonesia

0

BICT is managed by Pelindo I, one of four state owned Indonesian terminal operators. The terminal, located on the island of Java, serves the Straits of Malacca, the busiest shipping lane in the world.

The project involves the refurbishment of a Nelcon STS crane, with scope of work including the replacement of the electrical control system (PLC and DC drives), main dynamic brakes, wire ropes, spreader pulley sheaves and headblock. The scope also includes repair works for the DC motors and festoon system.

Akhmad Hidayah Alcaff, General Manager, BICT commented: “BICT being one of the busiest container terminals in the region, we need to make sure that our performance remains high in all situations. The refurbishment works will improve the overall reliability and performance of the crane for the foreseeable future. Kalmar with their local dealer, PT Indotruck Utama were evaluated and awarded the project because of their proven track record and strong local presence.”

Collin Swee, Director, Kalmar Crane Upgrades Business Centre in APAC said: “We are very excited to work with BICT on this project which will help them leverage their assets and keep downtime at the minimum.

“STS crane refurbishment is a very attractive choice when seeking improved crane performance and capacity, at minimum cost,” he continues. “Kalmar currently has six teams undertaking crane upgrade projects in the APAC region in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka. Each project team is led by an experienced project manager, and consists of multi-discipline technical specialists in the fields of structural and mechanical design and automation systems.”

Kalmar’s strategic intent is to become a leading global crane upgrade and refurbishment services provider, and it is serving customers through Crane Upgrades Business Centres in South America, North America, EMEA and APAC. In 2013, it completed several projects for customers worldwide.

First shipment of coal via the port of Nacala-a-Velha planned by Vale Mozambique

Managed by Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Corredor do Norte and owned by Vale Mozambique (80%) and by port and rail manager Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Mozambique (20 %), the development project for the Port of Nacala-a-Velha and the Moatize-Nacala railway line, is due to be operational as of next year. Investment in the project totals approximately US$D.5 billion. According to Saad work to complete the railway may be concluded at the end of the third quarter of this year. The railroad will have capacity to carry 18 million tonnes of coal per year and will solve the problems Vale Mozambique has faced with distributing its coal.

Similarly to Anglo-Australian group Rio Tinto, the Mozambican subsidiary of Brazilian group Vale has been using the Sena railroad to transport its coal to the port of Beira in Sofala province, but the railroad’s limited capacity has repeatedly impacted the companies’ results. In 2017 Vale Mozambique projects exports of 22 million tonnes of coal, of which 4 million tonnes will be exported via the port of Beira and 18 million tonnes via the port of Nacala-a-Velha. Ardelt delivers a new dedicated crane for bulk handling in Chile

0

In December of last year, the stationary Tukan 750 double jib level luffing crane was handed over to the Port of Panul in San Antonio.

A new crane was required at the port’s operation to unload bulk carriers delivering grains. Due to the planned increase in the annual handling capacity of the harbour it was decided that it would be necessary to install a new efficient crane. The new crane replaces an old and smaller crane that collapsed during the 2010 earthquake. The slewing crane with a double jib system and rack and pinion luffing gear has a maximum lifting capacity of 20 t and a maximum outreach of 36 m.

ARDELT not only had to realise the technical and operational requirements of the port operator, it was also essential to specify the design according to the Chilean standard for earthquake stability calculations NCH 2369, Class 1.

The assembly of the crane on site with very limited corner loads and the existing adjacent crane and conveyor system was a challenge for the ARDELT assembly team as erection directly onto the existing finger pier was not technically possible. Not forgetting the swell phenomenon that made the unloading of the preassembled crane parts difficult.

The erection of the preassembled crane parts by means of a giant telescopic crane installed behind the finger pier at the shore was completed in only seven days and the port remained fully operational during the whole process.

According to Dr Melzer, the General Manager of ARDELT, “This excellent performance could only be achieved together with full cooperation between us, the client, the reliable local assembly partner, as well as the civil engineering company involved, the final result was a success for all parties.

The General Manager of Puerto Panul, Mr Cordóva, is proud to own this low maintenance, efficient and cost effective crane with the ability to work at a high performance level over a long time and says that: “With the commissioning of the new equipment the port is confident that it will continue to be known for its excellent quality of service to customers”.
