US Federal arbitrator orders Union to pay damages for strike

The International Longshoremen’s Association Local 333 are expected to appeal the ruling. This was the first time that an attempt had been made to estimate the amount of money lost during the strike, and it is unclear if the damages are meant to account for ongoing revenue losses associated with reduced trust in labour stability at the port as the contract dispute that sparked the strike continues.

Major highways, bridges and roads have also been closed due to icy and hazardous conditions. Several flights have been cancelled and delays are being experienced at New Orleans Airport. Temperatures were expected to reach the mid-to-high 30s (Fahrenheit) later in the day, which may improve some road conditions. However, temperatures below freezing were forecasted again for yesterday-night.
