Port & Terminal Technology USA 2013 garners high praise from attendees

0

Aimed at representatives from operations, maintenance and engineering across the port and container market, the event delivered 20 technical presentations from an impressive panel of industry experts attracting over 130 attendees.

Specially designed as an intimate, niche and focused event – with a small exhibition comprising of a select handful of market-leaders – Port & Terminal Technology shirks the typical trade show format preferring to build on a quality versus quantity approach.

This formula clearly works with the event establishing itself as a “must-attend” for key port, terminal and maritime representatives, receiving much positive feedback from attendees citing Port & Terminal Technology as enjoyable, informative and worthwhile.

The convention was a success for attendees both old and new; Frank Hegan, President of first-time participants Crane Tech Solutions, says, “Thank you to you and the MCI Media team for hosting a worthwhile exhibition in Norfolk, VA.  We already have our first booking from the networking aspects and it paid for the booth.  This is good news!!!”

Meanwhile, David Milner, Vice President of regular attendees Dannenbaum Engineering Corporation, was very pleased with this years’ conference stating, “You all did an awesome job at the Norfolk event.”

Also of the same opinion was Phoenix Products Company Inc, who first joined Port & Terminal Technology in 2012. Returning as exhibitors, they “enjoyed the event very much”, with Ryan Hertel, Director of Business Development, confirming they found it “to be positive for business.”

The event garned a number of prominent industry sponsors including Arena Simulation, Collins Engineers, Trelleborg, Environ and Nicholson Construction Company, in particular, MCI Media were pleased to again welcome silver sponsors Konecranes, who have given a much-appreciated vote of confidence by returning every year since 2009.

There were a number of highlights to note across the two-day event, in particular the organisers were thrilled to be warmly welcomed by the Port of Virginia, who officially supported the 2013 show and hosted a much-enjoyed technical port tour and cocktail reception aboard the Carrie B, offering attendees the perfect chance to relax and network.

Furthermore, the conference was host to keynote speaker, Sean T Connaughton, Secretary of Transportation for the Commonwealth of Virginia, who presented a ‘Look to the future’ as well as delegate Tom Ward of Ports America, who chose to give an impromptu presentation on the day detailing ‘The terminal of the future’.

With the Port of Houston first hosting the event back in 2009 and with Long Beach, PortMiami and Norfolk, Virginia under its belt, Port & Terminal Technology looks set to continue its success and positive feedback on relevance and value to attendees, into 2014 and beyond.

PoMC manages over 500 hectares of port land and more than 100,000 hectares of declared port waters, including 45 nautical miles of commercial channels. Its Sustainability Framework identifies four priority strategies (Decisions & Guidelines; Leadership & Engagement; Culture & Behaviour; Knowledge & Capability) to measure its future performance and manage its operations in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable way.

SLR’s scope involves providing specialist sustainability advice on a range of matters including sustainable procurement approaches, developing sustainable performance metrics and reporting frameworks, assessment and auditing processes and peer review of a strategic air emission program.

Antony Sprigg, SLR’s Technical Director Sustainability, said: “Increasingly, large organisations are setting clear targets for sustainability – realising the value it can bring, both in terms of regulatory compliance and corporate social responsibility but also to the bottom line. Our work for PoMC as part of its sustainability program reflects similar work carried out by SLR in other parts of the world for businesses across a wide range of sectors.”

Last year SLR supported Irish based international buildings materials group, CRH in the development of its Environmental Review. This is the captain’s 15th maiden voyage over the course of his career, and we wish him well as he celebrates his birthday this week.

Chandnani, and his 22-member Indian crew were welcomed to Vancouver by ACGI Shipping Inc., Ports America, and representatives from the Port of Vancouver USA. John Cross, Port Captain for Saga, was present at the vessel plaque presentation as well.

The Saga Fjord is the fifth in a series of eight new build vessels to be delivered from Japan and Korea between November 2012 and November 2013. The vessel is classified as an open hatch box hold that is capable of traveling worldwide.

In addition, the vessel has the ability to use shore side electrical power while at berth, minimizing air pollution. Advanced ballast water treatment systems were installed, and all fuel tanks were protected with cofferdams toward the sea to provide extra protection against fuel spills, among other sustainable features.

The Saga Fjord was built in Korea and launched in January, 2013. The vessel is 656 feet in length and has a deadweight capacity of 55,596.4 metric tons, one of the largest of its kind ever to dock at the Port of Vancouver. The vessel is owned by Saga Shipholding AS of Norway and operated by Saga Forest Carriers Intl. The agent for the vessel is ACGI Shipping of Vancouver, WA.

Before docking at the Port of Vancouver, the Saga Fjord sailed from Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Incheon and Ulsan in Korea before discharging steel in Vancouver, B.C. The ship unloaded 7,909 metric tons of steel products at the Port of Vancouver before ultimately traveling to Los Angeles and onwards to Europe with bulk and break bulk products.
