APM Terminals Barcelona at top performance with the acquisition of new equipment

0

In a week the terminal reached 150 BMPH (berth moves per hour), as part of the largest service operation it offers with latest-generation ships. This event confirms the increase in productivity and performance facilitated by the latest investments made by the Catalan terminal – €47 million in recent months.

With the latest investments implemented, APM Terminals Barcelona reinforces its position as a leader in the maritime business, offering one of the best productivity levels in the Mediterranean, with the newest equipment, the most cutting-edge technology and a customer-focused service always striving for maximum excellence.

These investments include the acquisition of 2 new Super Post Panamax cranes from Los Angeles, with which APM Terminals Barcelona has a total of 6 SPX cranes currently operational and ready to provide simultaneous service to the latest-generation mega ships that stop over in the port of Barcelona. The STS cranes allow operations with ships of up to 23 containers across the beam. In addition, they can lift 100 tonnes and can also operate in TWIN mode (2×20’), which allows the terminal to further increase its level of service, offering customers the highest productivity of all the Mediterranean terminals.

APM Terminals Barcelona has implemented other improvements with the purpose of continuing to offer excellent service to its customers: it acquired 29 new straddle carriers (SCs), which have also bolstered the terminal’s performance. This allocation is the largest investment made in the Barcelona terminal in terms of this type of equipment.

At the same time, with the aim of increasing the technical capabilities of Barcelona’s terminal, APM Terminals has launched a new Rack platform for refrigerator connections, which has allowed it to increase its connection capacity by 31%.

This set of investments is part of APM Terminals’ strategy to modernise its current fleet and increase its equipment’s capacity and productivity, as well as to improve safety at the terminal. “We renew our commitment to the Port of Barcelona, outfitting ourselves with the technical equipment necessary to operate the most modern container ships that currently stop over in the Catalan capital”, explained Narcís Pavón, General Manager of APM Terminals Barcelona.

Giant Donut Fender to protect lock entrance at the Port of Bremen

The fender was produced at the facilities of our long term joint venture partner MFI in Los Angeles, USA. It was shipped on a flat rack container from Los Angeles (USA) to Hamburg (Germany) and from there onwards to the job site with a special lowboy trailer to cater for the large diameter. The fender was installed in June by a local marine contractor to a pile with 2300mm diameter.

The Donut Fender will protect the lock entrance at Oslebshausen in Bremen which is the connection between the industrial Port of Bremen and the river Weser.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance earns environmental recognition

One of six U.S. port authorities selected, the NWSA was recognised for its efforts to reduce seaport-related emissions through the Clean Truck Programme, installing shore power at terminals, retrofitting cargo-handling equipment, and investing in new, cost-effective stormwater treatment systems. Another major project highlighted was the NWSA’s work on the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy and its goals to reduce greenhouse gas and diesel particulate matter (DPM). Since 2005, DPM emissions have decreased by 80% per ton of cargo while greenhouse gas emissions declined 19% per ton of cargo.

In efforts to further curb harmful emissions, the NWSA Clean Truck Programme began requiring trucks on Jan. 1, 2019, with newer and cleaner engines, which reduce DPM by up to 90% per truck.

The 75 organisations are selected by Inbound Logistics editors and represent various trade sectors, including ports, trucking companies, railroads, shipping lines, freight forwarders and air cargo carriers. These companies are recognized for “going above and beyond to help shippers maintain sustainable, eco-friendly supply chain operations.”

About Inbound Logistics
Since its inception in 1981, Inbound Logistics‘ educational mission is to illustrate the benefits of demand-driven logistics practices, give companies the knowledge to help them match the inbound flow of materials to their demand and align their business processes to support that shift.

In addition to these connection and disconnection services, BEST offers all kinds of related services, such as PTI, cleaning, overhauls, monitoring, etc.

Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST, stated that “with this increase in the number of connections, BEST has reinforced its position as a hub for refrigerated cargoes, offering the main pharmaceutical and food product shippers all types of cold cargo related services, in addition to maritime connections with main ports of origin/destination”.

BEST currently has 11 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes capable of operating the world’s largest ships, 54 Automated Cranes (ASC), 2 Railway Terminal Cranes (RMG) and 32 Shuttle Carriers to operate the 80 Ha terminal and 1,500 metres of quay with a draft of 16.5 metres.

Since its official inauguration in September 2012, BEST continues to set new reference standards for southern European ports: achieving a vessel productivity rate (VOR) of over 220 movements per hour and a sustained average throughput of over 40 movements per hour and per crane (GCR), one of the highest in the world.

Hutchison Ports BEST is the first semi-automatic terminal developed by Hutchison Ports Group. In addition to being the most technologically advanced port project in Spain, the facilities have one of the largest railway terminals within a maritime terminal. Its railway facility has eight mixed gauge tracks (Iberian and UIC), which connect BEST daily with different points in Spain and the South of France.
